Arrival: A Conversation with Denis Villeneuve and Dr. Nina Beguš

Monday, November 2, 2026 · 7:30 PM · Academy Museum, Central L.A.

The Read

Villeneuve made a first-contact film where the problem is grammar, which no studio should have financed. Bradford Young lit it in fog and grey. Adams carries almost every scene and the structure only resolves if you have been watching her face.

The Venue

Academy Museum

The Academy's own film museum runs a serious repertory calendar across two purpose-built theaters, from family matinees to archival formats and filmmaker programs.

Shape The Night

Before

Hancock Park at the La Brea Tar Pits

0.4 mi · 8 min walk - Mid-Wilshire

Twenty-three acres of lawn wrapped around asphalt seeps that are still bubbling, with the Lake Pit and its life-size mammoth models at the Wilshire edge. The excavation pits are fenced but visible and people are often working in them. The museum building closed in July 2026 for a two-year rebuild, and the grounds, the Pleistocene Garden and the playground stayed open and free.

After

Tom Bergin's

0.3 mi · 6 min walk - Mid-Wilshire

A horseshoe bar under a ceiling papered in paper shamrocks, each one carrying a regular's name, some of them decades old. Tom Bergin opened the business in 1936 and it ran near-continuously at this Fairfax address until 2018, then reopened under new owners in December 2019 with the interior and the shamrocks intact. It is a landmarked building and the bar runs to 1am every night.
