Dal Rae RestaurantA 1958 supper house on Washington Boulevard that never updated itself, so the pepper steak is still flamed at the table and the Caesar is still mixed in front of you. Booths are dark red leather and the lounge has a piano on Thursday evenings. Walk-ins are taken and the bar will seat you without a booking, though weekend dinner fills up. Prices are not cheap but nothing about it is fashionable.

El Atacor #2A twenty-four hour taqueria on Whittier Boulevard, part of the small El Atacor group that Angelenos know for the fried potato taco. There is a drive-thru where somebody walks out to your car to take the order, and a walk-up window for everyone else. Asada, carnitas and the potato taco with a green salsa. Nothing about it closes, which is the feature.
