Portobanco's RestaurantOne of the few Nicaraguan restaurants in Los Angeles, on Venice Boulevard near Pico-Union. The plate to get is the carne asada nicaragüense with gallo pinto and fried cheese, and there is nacatamal on weekends. The family that runs it says plainly that the point is to keep Nicaraguan cooking going for a generation that grew up here.

Golden GopherThe liquor license here dates to 1905, which is why the bar can sell sealed bottles to go from a window on Eighth Street. Inside there are gopher lamps, a back patio and a jukebox. It opens at 3pm every day of the year and runs to 2am.
