Santa Monica, in Westside
Laemmle Monica Film Center
Cinema · 1332 2nd St
Six screens a few blocks from the Santa Monica beach, open since February 1970, when having more than one film playing at once had to be explained to readers.
It opened as the Monica I and II, and the design took the novelty seriously: separate bathrooms for each screen, and ropes down the middle of the lobby to stop anyone slipping from one film into the other.
There are six auditoriums now, with a mezzanine lounge next to the two upstairs. The programming is the Laemmle brief, quality film without regard to genre or provenance, which on the west side means a steady run of documentaries and subtitled releases.
Second Street sits a block behind the Third Street Promenade, close enough that the cinema picks up people who came downtown for something else entirely and found a screening starting.
