The Cinematheque has been screening films to the public since 1985 as a nonprofit that runs on members, donors and volunteers, and it programs new work next to revivals rather than choosing between the two.
Montana Avenue is a shopping street in a residential part of Santa Monica, which gives the Aero a neighborhood audience the Hollywood venues do not have. Bookings here often run as full retrospectives rather than single dates.
A 425-seat single screen sets the terms. One film at a time, and a filmmaker on stage afterward often enough that the conversation is part of the reason people turn up rather than a bonus.
