El Rey brings live bands into a Miracle Mile movie house, with an Art Deco lobby and sweeping staircases surviving the change of use.
Clifford Balch designed the building in 1936. It spent more than half a century showing films before becoming a concert venue in 1994.
The ballroom floor faces a full stage, with a balcony lounge above. At 770 capacity, it keeps touring acts within a theater-sized setting on Wilshire Boulevard.
