West Hollywood, in Central L.A.
The Roxy Theatre
Rock Club · 9009 West Sunset Blvd.
Neil Young opened the Roxy in 1973 and returned for its fiftieth anniversary. The Sunset Strip club still holds only about 500 people.
Lou Adler and Elmer Valentine established the venue with partners including David Geffen. Early bills mixed musicians with comedians, from the Temptations and Frank Zappa to Cheech and Chong.
Paul Reubens staged The Pee-wee Herman Show here in 1981. That theatrical history sits alongside decades of band bookings, all within a comparatively small West Hollywood club.
