The Smell makes DIY literal: the people playing and attending shows also book them, staff the door and run the sound.
The Downtown art and music space has operated since 1998 as a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organization. Local bands share bills with visiting acts, and visual artists show work on the walls.
All ages are welcome, and alcohol is not allowed. A vegan snack bar serves food, water, tea and coffee, keeping the focus on the performance rather than drink sales.
