East Hollywood, in Central L.A.
The Stray Theater
Comedy Club · 4319 Melrose Ave
A fifty-seat black box on Melrose in East Hollywood, standing where the Yard Theater, Fake Gallery and the hardcore space Macondo were before it.
The nonprofit that runs it programs comedy, music and screenings in the same week, and the seat count goes to seventy-five once extra chairs go in. Nothing about the layout is fixed, which is what a black box is for.
Melrose this far east is a different stretch from the shopping blocks near Fairfax, mostly low storefronts. The theater's stated purpose is experimentation across forms, which is how one stage ends up carrying a film screening and a stand-up set in the same week.
