Hermosa Beach, in South Bay

The Lighthouse Cafe

Bar · 30 Pier Ave

Official siteDirections

The Lighthouse's jazz history still has a place in Hermosa Beach, with Sunday brunch and jam sessions alongside reggae, salsa and rock.

Howard Rumsey began a trial Sunday jam at the bar in May 1949, with owner John Levine's permission. His Lighthouse All-Stars became a house band whose guests included Chet Baker and Miles Davis.

The Pier Avenue business began as a restaurant in 1934 and became a bar in 1940. Its recording history includes albums by Lee Morgan, Cannonball Adderley and Art Blakey, among many others.
