Pasadena Playhouse

Pasadena Playhouse stages new work and revivals in a theater built with local donations, carrying a community project into its second century.

Gilmor Brown founded the company in 1917. More than 1,000 Pasadena residents contributed toward its El Molino Avenue home, which opened in 1925 and anchors the Playhouse District.

The organization also ran an actor-training school for decades. Its production history includes premieres by Tennessee Williams, Eugene O'Neill and Suzan-Lori Parks, and California designated it the state theater in 1937.
