Before
Economy Candy
Candy store

Open on Rivington since 1937 and run now by the third generation of the same family. The shelves go to the ceiling and carry brands that stopped being sold everywhere else. Almost nothing in here costs more than a few dollars.

Daily, 11am to 6pm

Essex Market
Public market

The city opened this market in January 1940 to move the pushcart peddlers off the Lower East Side streets, and it crossed Delancey into a new building in 2019. Around thirty independent vendors sell under one roof. You can eat for very little or buy groceries and leave.

Mon to Wed, 8am to 8pm. Thu to Sat, 8am to 9pm. Sun, 10am to 6pm

Kopitiam
Malaysian coffee shop

Kyo Pang cooks the Nyonya food she grew up with, and the coffee is kopi, brewed strong and poured over condensed milk. Kuih and toast come out through the day rather than only at breakfast. It sits down on East Broadway, below the busy Lower East Side blocks.

Daily, 10am to 10pm

Metrograph
Repertory cinema

Two screens on Ludlow Street running 35mm prints and repertory programming, open since 2016. There is a bookshop selling film titles and a candy counter off the lobby. The Commissary alongside it does dinner and is modelled on the old studio canteens.

Screening times set the day and the box office opens ahead of the first film. The Commissary runs Wed to Sun, 5pm to 10pm, and is closed Monday and Tuesday

Russ & Daughters
Appetizing shop

Joel Russ moved his appetizing shop to this corner of Houston Street in 1920 and the fourth generation of the family runs it now. Smoked fish is sliced to order behind a counter you take a number for. There is nowhere to sit.

Daily, 8am to 4pm

Sara D. Roosevelt Park
Public park

A long strip of park running from Houston down to Canal between Chrystie and Forsyth, with basketball courts at the top and community gardens along the length of it. The M'Finda Kalunga garden has a koi pond and a chicken coop behind its gate. It is the green space immediately behind the Bowery Ballroom block.

Daily, 6am to 10pm. The M'Finda Kalunga garden gate opens Thu 5pm to 7pm and Sat and Sun noon to 4pm

Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery
Knish bakery

Yonah Schimmel sold knishes off a pushcart before taking this Houston Street storefront in 1910. The counter still sells one thing seriously, a baked knish, potato or kasha. You eat it standing or you take it away.

Daily, 10:30am to 6pm

After
169 Bar
Dive bar

A bar at 169 East Broadway that opened in 1916 and was known for years as the Bloody Bucket. A leopard-print pool table sits under the neon and the sound system stays on seventies funk. It opens at two in the afternoon and runs until four in the morning.

Daily, 2pm to 4am. Happy hour 2pm to 7:30pm

Clandestino
Neighborhood bar

A bar on the block where the Lower East Side runs into Chinatown, open until four in the morning seven days a week. Laure Travers runs it and the music leans away from whatever is on down the street. There is pâté and a few snacks if you want something with the drink.

Mon to Fri, 4:30pm to 4am. Sat and Sun, 3:30pm to 4am

Home Sweet Home
Basement bar

Down a staircase off Chrystie Street into a low, dark bar that has been going since 2006, with taxidermy on the walls above cheap drinks. DJs and live sets start around ten on weekend nights. It is sixty seconds from the Bowery Ballroom door.

Mon to Sat, 6pm to 4am. Sun, 8pm to 4am. Happy hour to 8:30pm on weekdays

Katz's Delicatessen
Jewish delicatessen

Cutters have been hand-slicing pastrami behind this counter since 1888 and the ticket handed to you at the door is still the system. Order at the counter, tip the cutter, and you eat sooner than a table would let you. It runs straight through Friday and Saturday nights.

Mon to Thu, 8am to 11pm. Open continuously from Friday 8am until Sunday 11pm

Le Dive
Natural wine bar

A French tabac styled bar on the corner of Canal and Orchard, with most of the crowd standing on the sidewalk. Natural wine by the glass and a short menu built around pâté and tinned fish. It opened in the 2020s and has not tried to become anything larger since.

Mon, 3pm to midnight. Tue and Wed, 3pm to 1am. Thu and Fri, 3pm to 2am. Sat, noon to 2am. Sun, noon to midnight

Scarr's Pizza
Slice counter

Scarr Pimentel opened this in 2016 after learning to make pizza at Lombardi's, and the kitchen mills part of its own wheat and blends it with flour from upstate New York. In June 2023 it crossed Orchard Street into a bigger space at number 35. Order a plain slice at the counter and take a booth.

Mon to Wed, 11:30am to 11pm. Thu, 11:30am to midnight. Fri and Sat, 11:30am to 2am. Sun, 11:30am to 11pm
