5 stopsA barbershop below Astor Place that has been cutting since 1947, with a floor of chairs and no appointment needed. A cut costs a fraction of what the surrounding blocks charge. It opens at seven in the morning.

A shop and label on East 2nd Street dealing in experimental music, with tapes and books alongside the records. Village Preservation made it their Business of the Month in July 2026. They buy as well as sell, so the stock moves.

The only nineteenth century house in Manhattan with its original interior and exterior intact, built in 1832 and lived in by the Tredwell family for close to a century. It became a museum in 1936 with the furniture still in place. It stands on the same block as La MaMa.

The contemporary art museum on the Bowery reopened in March 2026 with a seven-story glass addition by OMA next to the original SANAA building, which more than doubled its size. Admission is pay what you wish from seven to nine on Thursday evenings. It is a few minutes from The Box and from Bowery Ballroom.

A pool hall on 11th at Fourth Avenue with a full bar at the front and tables behind it. Pool, ping pong and darts, open to 3am every night of the week. You can take a table for an hour or sit at the bar and not take one at all. Leagues run here, so some nights a section of the floor is spoken for while the rest is walk-up.
