Light Horse Tavern
Old tavern

A corner building from the 1850s at Washington and Morris, restored in 2002 with the oak floors, pressed-tin ceiling and tall windows left in place. It was a speakeasy during Prohibition. The name comes from Henry Lee III, who led the Battle of Paulus Hook a few streets from here in 1779. There is a short tavern menu between lunch and dinner if you only want a plate and a drink.

Tue to Fri, lunch 11:30am to 4pm, tavern menu 4pm to 5pm, dinner 5pm to 10pm, bar to midnight. Thu and Fri, dinner to 11pm and bar to 12:30am. Sat, brunch 10:30am to 3:30pm, dinner 5pm to 11pm, bar to 1am. Sun, brunch 10:30am to 3:30pm, dinner 5pm to 10pm, bar to 11:30pm. Closed Mon

sam a.m.
Breakfast counter

A small breakfast place on Morris Street doing eggs, sandwiches and espresso, open from half past six on a weekday. It writes its name in lower case and keeps the menu to what it can do well before lunch. There is a second sam a.m. in Bergen-Lafayette that has closed, so this Paulus Hook address is the one that trades.

Mon to Fri, 6:30am to 3:30pm. Sat and Sun, 8am to 2:30pm

The Colgate Clock and the waterfront walkway
Riverfront walk

A fifty-foot octagonal clock face standing on its own at the foot of Essex Street, left behind when Colgate pulled its soap works out of Jersey City in 1985 after a hundred and forty-one years. The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway runs past it on a paved path, with lower Manhattan across the water. The clock was put up in 1924 and moved to this spot when the factory came down.

Open at all hours. Lit after dark
