Shape The Day
Before
Tom's RestaurantA diner on Washington Avenue that opened in 1936 as an ice cream parlor and has been run by the same family through three generations. The walls are covered in decades of accumulated stuff and someone will hand you orange slices or a coffee while you wait outside. Breakfast and lunch only, and it shuts in the afternoon.

After
Freddy's BarFreddy's spent decades at 485 Dean Street until the state condemned the block for the arena that is now Barclays Center, and it closed there in spring 2010 after a seven-year fight. Former staff reopened it on Fifth Avenue in 2011 with the same bar, the same junk on the walls and the same backroom for music, comedy and readings. It is open until four every night of the year and the kitchen runs until two.
