Caffè ReggioDomenico Parisi opened this on MacDougal Street in 1927 and the 1902 espresso machine he bought is still standing in the front. The walls are hung with Italian paintings and an old Medici bench, and nobody hurries you off a marble table. It runs to three in the morning most nights, which is later than almost any other café in the neighborhood.

Joe's PizzaJoe Pozzuoli opened this in 1975 and it has been on the Carmine Street corner ever since, aside from one forced move a few doors down and back. The plain slice is the whole argument. There are no tables worth the name, you eat standing at the counter or on the sidewalk, and the line moves as fast as the oven does.
