Masada is Zorn's project applying Ornette Coleman's methods to Jewish liturgical scales, and the quartet version is the most direct. Sets are short, loud and over before you have settled.

The Grey DogA coffee shop on West 16th just east of Eighth that also does eggs, sandwiches and a burger, from a counter you order at rather than a table you are seated at. Wooden chairs, old framed prints on the walls, mugs rather than paper cups if you are staying. It opens at eight and runs to nine at night every day of the week, which is a longer day than anything else on this block.

Kettle of FishA dark bar on Christopher Street with darts and an old Ms. Pac-Man cabinet, plus couches people sit on for hours. It is the Green Bay Packers bar in New York, which on a Sunday in autumn means the place is full of Wisconsin accents by noon. The rest of the week it is quiet and cheap.
