Chelsea, in Manhattan
The Jazz Gallery
Jazz Club · 1160 Broadway, 5th Floor
The Jazz Gallery gives musicians a place to try new work in public, backed by commissions, rehearsal access and time to develop it.
Dale Fitzgerald, Lezlie Harrison and Roy Hargrove founded the nonprofit in 1995. Its original home gave Hargrove's big band somewhere to rehearse alongside visual art exhibitions.
The current program pairs emerging players with established musicians who are still experimenting. Residencies and mentoring help explain why a performance may feel like an idea taking shape.
