The Read

Made for public television and released theatrically, and it treats nuclear war as a slow domestic event rather than spectacle. Jane Alexander was nominated for it. Nothing explodes on screen.

The Venue

Museum of the Moving Image

36-01 35th Ave

A museum of film and television inside one of thirteen buildings of the old Astoria studio complex, where Paramount made pictures on the East Coast from 1920.

Before

Arepas Cafe

0.3 mi · 6 min walk - Astoria

A narrow Venezuelan place on 36th Avenue that has been griddling arepas on this block since the late 2000s. You order at the counter from a board of about twenty fillings and the reina pepiada is the one most people come back for. There are a dozen or so tables and the turnover is quick. It sits directly across 36th Avenue from Melrose Ballroom's door.

After

Cronin & Phelan's

0.4 mi · 8 min walk - Astoria

A traditional Irish pub on Broadway that calls itself the longest-standing one in Astoria, in a building that goes back to the start of the last century. The current owner took it over in the early 1990s and it has stayed a darts-and-regulars pub rather than being made over. The kitchen runs Irish standards and there is a back garden. It opens in the morning and holds a 4am license.
