The Read

Scorsese called it the most violent film he had made, and he was not being cute. The cruelty is procedural: a dinner invitation, a seating chart, a conversation nobody has. Michael Ballhaus shoots food and fabric with the attention usually reserved for weapons.

The Venue

Metrograph

A two-screen cinema that opened on Ludlow Street in 2016 around rare archival prints and premieres, with a restaurant modeled on the commissaries of the old Hollywood studios.

Shape The Day

Before

Wu's Wonton King

0.1 mi · 3 min walk - Chinatown - Bowery

Large round tables under bright light on East Broadway, doing Cantonese roast meats, Peking duck and whole fried crab. The roast suckling pig has to be ordered ahead. There is no corkage at all, so people carry their own bottles in. It took over the old Wing Shoon storefront in 2016.

4:20 PM · The Age of Innocence

After

169 Bar

0.2 mi · 3 min walk - Lower East Side

A bar at 169 East Broadway that opened in 1916 and was known for years as the Bloody Bucket. A leopard-print pool table sits under the neon and the sound system stays on seventies funk. It opens at two in the afternoon and runs until four in the morning.
