NoHo, in Manhattan
Cooper Union
Museum Cinema · 30 Cooper Sq
The East Village college that Peter Cooper founded in 1859 as a free center of learning, whose auditoriums still carry public talks, debates and screenings.
Cooper was an inventor and industrialist who argued that education produced civic virtue as much as personal prosperity, and he looked forward to a time when knowledge would cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.
Degrees here are in art, architecture and engineering, with courses in the humanities and social sciences alongside them, and the public programming tends to follow the same subjects. The campus is at Cooper Square, so the audience is as likely to come from the neighborhood as from the school.
