Before
Washington Square ParkNine and a half acres with a fountain in the middle and a marble arch at the north end, and on any warm afternoon several musicians working different corners of it at once. The stone chess tables on the southwest side are in use most of the day. It is the closest open ground to every venue on Bleecker Street.

Kettle of FishA dark bar on Christopher Street with darts and an old Ms. Pac-Man cabinet, plus couches people sit on for hours. It is the Green Bay Packers bar in New York, which on a Sunday in autumn means the place is full of Wisconsin accents by noon. The rest of the week it is quiet and cheap.
