Greenwich Village, in Manhattan
Comedy Cellar at the Village Underground
Comedy Club · 130 W 3rd St
The Comedy Cellar's second Manhattan stage sits in the basement of what was once Gerdes Folk City, where Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel played in the 1960s.
Noam Dworman, who owns Cafe Wha?, took the West 3rd Street basement with George Buchalter in 2000 to put music back into it, and Steve Weitzman booked it after years programming the 1,000-seat Tramps. Ike Turner, Patti Smith and Meshell Ndegeocello played the reopened space.
It now works as the Cellar's second comedy stage under the same ownership, drawing from the same pool of comics as MacDougal Street around the corner, in bills of several performers rather than a single headliner.
