Lower East Side, in Manhattan
Abrons Arts Center
Off-Off-Broadway / Experimental · 466 Grand St
Abrons Arts Center has been the Henry Street Settlement's stage on the Lower East Side since 1975, programming experimental theater, dance and music.
The center opened in 1975 as the Arts for Living Center, next to the Neighborhood Playhouse, which had anchored arts on the Lower East Side since 1915. Its building at Grand and Pitt is open daily from 10am to 10pm, so the lobby is reachable well before a curtain.
Programming runs alongside education classes and artist residencies rather than separately from them. A given week can hold a world premiere, a student showcase and a visual-art opening on the same block of Grand Street.
