Ambassador Theatre

The Ambassador's hexagonal auditorium sits diagonally on its lot, an architectural workaround that gives Chicago's Broadway home an unusual shape.

The Shuberts built the theater in 1921 during an expansion around West 48th and 49th Streets. Herbert Krapp designed elaborate plaster decoration behind a relatively plain brick exterior.

The building has also served as a cinema and broadcast studio. It returned to stage productions in 1956, and the current Chicago revival transferred here in 2003.
