Archival Cinema · 32 2nd Ave
Jonas Mekas and four others opened this in 1970 as a center for preserving and showing experimental film. It still screens more than 900 programs a year.
Essential Cinema, the founding repertory collection, was assembled to encourage study of the medium's masterworks as works of art rather than disposable entertainment, which made it the first museum built around film as an art form.
Preservation runs alongside exhibition at about twenty-five films a year, with some 900 works preserved to date, plus books and DVDs and a steady traffic of scholars. Programming splits across two theaters, the smaller named for Maya Deren.
The governing conviction is stated plainly: that the health of a culture shows up in its margins, in work made outside the commercial mainstream. Almost nothing on the calendar was made to fill a multiplex.
