Downtown Brooklyn, in Brooklyn
Mono No Aware
Microcinema · 33 Flatbush Ave
A film organization founded in 2007 around expanded cinema, where projection happens live alongside sound or performance, and which still runs an annual festival of the form.
The name is a Japanese phrase the group translates as a connection to the ephemeral, which describes work that exists only while the projector is running.
Alongside the festival, which draws close to 4,000 people and dozens of artists from outside the country, it teaches analog filmmaking, holds monthly screenings with the artists present, and keeps a lab, editing facilities and a library for people still working on film.
Screenings happen at its own space on Flatbush Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn and also wherever a program calls for, which is normal for an organization that began as a single exhibition and grew outward from there.
