The School of Visual Arts runs two theaters on West 23rd Street behind a marquee topped by a Milton Glaser kinetic sculpture that moves on the hour.
The building opened in 1963 as the RKO 23rd Street and has held a run of tenants since, the Roundabout Theatre Company among them. Glaser designed the lobby and the backstage areas as well as the piece over the marquee.
The larger of the two theaters, the Silas, seats 479. Bookings are not limited to the school: film festivals, premieres, awards shows and conferences rent the space, so the calendar carries outside programming alongside student work.
