Pomona College's art museum, on Bonita at the north edge of Claremont Village, and free to anybody who walks in. The galleries rotate through the college collection and visiting shows, and they stay open until eight on Thursdays, which is unusual for a campus museum. On the first Saturday of the month the hours stretch for the Claremont Art Walk.
Thu, 11am to 8pm. Fri to Sun, 11am to 6pm. Closed Mon to Wed
An ice cream counter on Yale Avenue with a candy case at the front and a line that runs out onto the sidewalk on a warm evening. They make their own and the waffle cones get pressed where you can see them. It opens at noon and runs to nine most nights and ten on Friday and Saturday, which makes it the Village's default after-show stop.
Mon to Thu, noon to 9pm. Fri and Sat, noon to 10pm. Sun, noon to 9pm
Eighty-six acres north of the Claremont Colleges planted entirely with California natives, which makes it the largest garden in the state devoted to them. The collections run past twenty-two thousand plants, some of them rare or endangered, and the paths are wide and mostly flat. It closes at five, so this is a daytime stop and a long one if you let it be.
Tue to Sun, 8am to 5pm. Closed Mondays and on major holidays
A bakery on Yale Avenue that dates itself to 1916 and has been the Claremont Village's morning counter ever since, with bread, pastry, a short breakfast and lunch menu and coffee to take out onto the sidewalk. The line at eight in the morning is students and faculty in roughly equal measure. It shuts early, at one on Monday and two on Sunday.
Mon, 6:30am to 1pm. Tue, 6:30am to 4pm. Wed to Fri, 6:30am to 6pm. Sat, 7am to 6pm. Sun, 8am to 2pm
A dark space off Oberlin Avenue built around Belgian beer, with the abbey ales and lambics on a board and a burger that the regulars order without looking. The bar runs down one side and there is a patio out front. Friday and Saturday run to eleven, which in Claremont counts as late.
Mon to Wed, 11am to 9:30pm. Thu, 11am to 10pm. Fri, 11am to 11pm. Sat, 10am to 11pm. Sun, 10am to 9:30pm
A café on Harvard Avenue with a patio under the trees, coffee, sandwiches and soup, and enough students working at the tables that nobody will mind if you sit for an hour. Vegan and gluten-free options are on the board rather than an afterthought. It closes at twenty past four, which is not a typo and is the one thing that decides whether this stop works.
Daily, 8am to 4:20pm
