El Coyote
Food

Blanche and George March opened El Coyote in 1931 and moved it to Beverly Boulevard in 1951, where the dark booths, the paper lanterns and the servers in full Mexican dress have stayed put. The food is combination plates and the margaritas come in volume. It is cheap, it is dim and the dining area is big enough that walking in on a Friday usually works.

Wed and Thu, noon to 9pm. Fri and Sat, noon to 10pm. Sun, noon to 9pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday

Fairfax
Melrose Trading Post
Shops

Every Sunday the Fairfax High School parking lot fills with around 250 vendors selling vintage clothing, records, furniture and whatever else turned up that week. Admission is three dollars and the money funds arts programs at the school and productions at the Greenway Court Theatre next door. It takes an hour to walk properly and you can leave with nothing.

Sundays only, 10am to 5pm

Petersen Automotive Museum
Culture

Four floors of cars on Wilshire at Fairfax, behind the red ribbon facade. Under the building is the Vault, a few hundred rare vehicles including prototypes and concepts that never went into production. It is ticketed separately from general admission and cameras are not allowed down there.

Daily 10am to 6pm. Last entry 4:30pm and the last call for the Vault is 5pm.

The Original Farmers Market
Food

An open-air market at Third and Fairfax since 1934, built out of the stalls farmers set up on a vacant dairy field and never taken down. You eat standing or at a shared table under the green awnings, from whichever counter you want, and Bob's Coffee and Doughnuts opens at 8am for the people who arrive before anything else does. Parking on site is free for the first hour.

Mon to Fri, 9am to 9pm. Sat, 9am to 8pm. Sun, 10am to 7pm
