Pomona
Donahoo's Golden Chicken
Food

A walk-up fried chicken stand on North Garey with a hand-painted sign and a line that forms on the sidewalk at lunch. It is cash only, they will not take an order over the phone, and the chicken comes in a box with a roll. There is no dining space to speak of, so people eat in the car or take it somewhere.

Daily, 10am to 7:30pm

Pomona
El Merendero
Food

A Mexican restaurant and panaderia on Garey Avenue that opens at 5:30 in the morning and keeps going until the evening. The bakery case runs along one side and the kitchen turns out menudo, chilaquiles and plates of the standard sort all day. It is counter-forward and fast, and nobody minds how long you sit. Two blocks from the Fox Theater marquee.

Mon to Thu, 5:30am to 8:30pm. Fri and Sat, 5:30am to 9pm. Sun, 5:30am to 8pm

Pomona
Mi Cafecito Coffee
Coffee

A small coffee bar on South Main run by a young couple, with a shaded canopy of seats out front and a few tables inside. The drinks lean Mexican, so cafe de olla, horchata, chocolate Mexicano and a dulce de leche latte sit alongside the nitro cold brew. It opens at seven and closes in the early afternoon, which makes it an honest matinee stop and nothing else.

Daily, 7am to 2pm

Pomona
The Rookery Alehouse and Grill
Drinks

A pub on 2nd Street with a long draft list and a short menu of wings, burgers and loaded fries. It sits right in the middle of the Arts Colony, a few doors from The Glass House, so the crowd before and after a show is mostly people going to or coming from one. Order at the bar, sit where you like, nobody rushes you out.

Tue to Thu, noon to 9pm. Fri and Sat, noon to 10pm. Sun, noon to 5pm. Closed Mondays
