Glenn Goldman opened this on the Strip in 1975 and it holds around 60,000 titles, weighted toward art, film and photography. The aisles are narrow and the stock is stacked on the floor where it has run out of shelf. Author events run most weeks and are usually free.
Monday to Saturday 9am to 10pm, Sunday 9am to 7pm
The Rainbow opened on the Strip in 1972 inside the former Villa Nova, immediately uphill from the Roxy. Red booths, a pizza menu and a heated patio out front where people stand until closing. Lemmy's barstool is still where it was and there is a statue of him by it.
Monday to Friday 11am to 2am, Saturday and Sunday 3pm to 2am
Pierre Koenig's 1960 glass box cantilevered off a ridge above the Sunset Strip, and the subject of the Julius Shulman photograph of two women sitting in a lit corner over the whole grid at night. The Stahl family still owns it and still runs the visits themselves, which is why the rules are so particular.
Reservation-only timed tours released in roughly half-month tranches, afternoon and evening
The ground-floor apartment Bugsy Siegel lived in, inside the 1929 Art Deco Sunset Tower. It runs as a restaurant and bar with a dress code enforced at the door and a standing rule against phones and photographs. Sunday dinner is for hotel guests only.
