Before
Bunkado
Japanese gift shop

Suye and Tokio Ueyama opened this shop on First Street in 1946, straight out of the incarceration camps, at the address where the first Japanese business in Los Angeles had stood. Irene Tsukada Simonian is the third generation to run it. The stock runs from ceramics and incense to calligraphy brushes.

Mon to Thu 10am to 6pm. Fri to Sun 11am to 7pm

Cafe Dulce
Coffee and donut counter

A coffee counter in the middle of Japanese Village Plaza, open since 2010, known for a green tea donut and a bacon-wrapped one. The seating is the plaza itself. It opens at 8am and runs into the evening, which is rare for a coffee place downtown.

Mon to Thu 8am to 7pm. Fri and Sat 8am to 9pm. Sun 8am to 8pm

Fugetsu-Do
Mochi confectionery

A family confectionery on First Street since 1903, now in its fourth generation. The cases hold manju and mochi made that morning and sold by the piece. The shop closed during the wartime incarceration and reopened in the same block afterward.

Daily, 8am to 6pm

After
Far Bar
Bar down an alley

Set in a narrow brick passage off First Street in Little Tokyo, in a building that was a chop suey house before the war. The list runs long on whiskey and Japanese beer. A patio sits in the alley itself, and food is served until close. It stays open past midnight every night of the week.

Mon to Thu 3pm to midnight. Fri and Sat noon to 1:30am. Sun noon to midnight

Wolf & Crane
Japanese whisky bar

A small bar on Second Street with the largest Japanese whisky selection in the city and a highball program to match. It is a neighborhood bar first, with regulars at the counter on a Tuesday. Open until 2am every night.

Mon to Thu 5pm to 2am. Fri 4pm to 2am. Sat and Sun 2pm to 2am
