Best Fish Taco in Ensenada
Nautical-themed taqueria with a salsa bar

The menu is three things: fish tacos, shrimp tacos, potato tacos. Corn tortillas are made on site and whoever takes your order fries the seafood behind the counter while you wait. You get the taco plain and then dress it yourself at a bar of cabbage, lime-soaked radish relish, chipotle crema and house salsas. A fish taco is $3.50, shrimp $4.25, potato $3.25.

Daily 11am to 9pm, from listings. The operator publishes a menu but no hours.

Griffith Observatory
Public observatory

The 1935 observatory on the south face of Mount Hollywood, in copper-domed Art Deco, and it has been free to walk into since the day it opened. Evening telescope viewing is available. A Foucault pendulum stands in the entry, and the terrace takes in the basin from downtown to the ocean. The building runs until 10pm, which is later than almost anything else of this kind in the city.

Little Dom's
Italian-American restaurant with a standing bar

Warner Ebbink and chef Brandon Boudet opened this in January 2008 in the old La Belle Epoque space on Hillhurst. Ebbink put in a 1930s wooden bar he bought off a saloon in Easton, Pennsylvania, and leaded-glass windows salvaged from a New York building that was coming down. Boudet is from New Orleans and it shows on the menu. Handmade pastas, wood-fired pizzas, brunch on the weekend.

Monday to Thursday 10am to 10pm, Friday 10am to midnight, Saturday 9am to midnight, Sunday 9am to 10pm. Weekend brunch runs 9am to 3pm and there is counter service on weekdays 10am to 4pm.

Philosophical Research Society
Research library, bookstore and gallery in a 1935 Mayan Revival building

Manly P. Hall founded this in 1934 and had Robert Stacy-Judd build it in Mayan Revival, which is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. The library holds more than thirty thousand volumes on religion, mythology and the occult, some of them rare. The Hansell Gallery opened in 2018 and the bookstore carries rare titles alongside zines and tarot decks made by artists who live nearby.

Bookstore and Hansell Gallery Tuesday to Friday noon to 6pm, and during events. Library Thursday and Friday noon to 6pm. Closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Vista Theater
Single-screen film theater

A 1923 single-screen theater at the fork of Sunset and Hollywood, bought by Quentin Tarantino in 2021 and reopened in November 2023 after a restoration. It projects film only, 35mm and 70mm, with no digital. A twenty-seat second screen was added in 2024.

Daily, roughly 11am to 11pm depending on the day's program. Sunday runs 10am to midnight, Monday and Thursday close at 10pm

Vista Theatre
Single-screen cinema

A 1923 cinema by Lewis A. Smith with a Spanish Colonial Revival front and an Egyptian interior, bought by Quentin Tarantino in 2021 and reopened in 2023. It runs 400 seats and projects film only, in 35mm and 70mm. Pam's Coffy operates next door under the same ownership.

Yuca's
Yucatecan taco hut in a parking lot

Socorro Herrera and her husband Jaime turned an eight-by-ten-foot shoeshine stand into this on April 1, 1976, cooking the Merida recipes she grew up with. It won a James Beard America's Classics award in 2005. Cochinita pibil is the order; there are also vaporcitos and Yucatan tamales. Socorro died in December 2024 and her daughters Dora and Margie run it now.

Monday to Saturday 11am to 5:30pm. Closed Sunday. The Pasadena location on South Fair Oaks runs to 6:30pm and is about five times the size.

House of Pies
Diner and pie counter

A diner on Vermont serving since 1969, baking more than thirty pies a day and doing breakfast at any hour. Booths, a counter and a pie case by the door. It runs to 1am most nights and 2am on Friday and Saturday.

Sunday to Thursday 7am to 1am, Friday and Saturday 7am to 2am

The Dresden
Lounge with live music

A lounge on Vermont that has kept its 1950s fittings and books live players five nights a week. Marty and Elayne held the residency here for nearly forty years until Marty Roberts died in January 2022, and the music kept going. The bar is long and you can sit at it without ordering dinner.

Wednesday and Thursday 5pm to midnight, Friday and Saturday 5pm to 1am, Sunday 5pm to 10pm, closed Monday and Tuesday

Tiki-Ti
Tiki bar

Ray Buhen, a Filipino immigrant who tended bar at Don the Beachcomber, opened this twelve-seat bar in 1961 in what had been his father-in-law's violin repair shop. His son and grandson, both named Mike, are the only two people who work there. It is closed more days than it is open.

Wednesday to Saturday evenings. Posted closing times vary between midnight and 2am, so check before you count on it
