Watts Towers of Simon Rodia
Folk art monument
Seventeen sculptures an Italian tile setter named Sabato Rodia built alone in his back yard on 107th Street between 1921 and 1954, out of steel rod, mortar, broken bottles and tile he picked up on the job. The tallest is nearly a hundred feet. The towers stand behind a fence you can see through from the sidewalk at any hour, and the arts center next door runs guided tours on a short weekly schedule. It is a State Historic Park and a National Historic Landmark.
