Griffith ObservatoryThe 1935 observatory on the south face of Mount Hollywood, in copper-domed Art Deco, and it has been free to walk into since the day it opened. Evening telescope viewing is available. A Foucault pendulum stands in the entry, and the terrace takes in the basin from downtown to the ocean. The building runs until 10pm, which is later than almost anything else of this kind in the city.

Tiki-TiRay Buhen, a Filipino immigrant who tended bar at Don the Beachcomber, opened this twelve-seat bar in 1961 in what had been his father-in-law's violin repair shop. His son and grandson, both named Mike, are the only two people who work there. It is closed more days than it is open.
