Before
El CoyoteBlanche and George March opened El Coyote in 1931 and moved it to Beverly Boulevard in 1951, where the dark booths, the paper lanterns and the servers in full Mexican dress have stayed put. The food is combination plates and the margaritas come in volume. It is cheap, it is dim and the dining area is big enough that walking in on a Friday usually works.

After
Du-par'sA diner counter that has been in the Farmers Market since 1938, with its own door on the Third Street side and its own hours, later than the market around it. Pancakes and pies come from a full breakfast menu at any hour it is open. The booths are vinyl, the coffee is refilled without asking, and on a weekend it runs past midnight.
