The Iliad BookshopOne of the largest and oldest used bookstores in Southern California, on the Cahuenga and Chandler corner, with more than 150,000 books and a leaning toward literature and the arts. Everything is secondhand. There is free parking, air conditioning that matters in August, and two cats who will sit on whatever you are reading. Closed Sunday and Monday.

NoBarA dive on the east end of Magnolia with pool, craft beer on tap and cocktails that are better than the lighting suggests. It opens at 5pm and runs to 2am every night of the week, which in this part of the Valley is unusual. Regulars sit at the bar, and nobody is here for the décor.
