Beverly Hills, in Westside
Fine Arts Theatre
Cinema · 8556 Wilshire Blvd
A 1937 movie theater on Wilshire in Beverly Hills, a block west of the Metro D Line station, running a monthly Sunday series of older features in 70mm.
The building predates the multiplex and was designed for one screen and one audience at a time, which is still how it works. Programming mixes current releases with revivals of films made to be seen at a size no living display can manage.
Recent Sunday bookings have included Lawrence of Arabia and the 1974 disaster picture Earthquake, which tells you the series is after scale rather than obscurity. The theater also puts live entertainment on the same calendar as film.
Wilshire at La Cienega is a transit corner now, so getting here does not require a car. That changes who is willing to commit an afternoon to a three-hour-plus booking.
