The Groundlings Theatre & School

Founded by Gary Austin in 1974 on Melrose, where the forty company members write and perform the shows and also teach the classes.

A Groundling is a company member rather than a customer. The forty of them make the sketch shows and run the school, so the teaching and the stage belong to one operation instead of two.

The organization is a 501(c)3 nonprofit and the school sits inside it rather than alongside as a separate business. Its own framing is as a training ground for Hollywood, and the address is on the same Melrose stretch as several other comedy stages.
