Before Freddy Krueger became a mascot, Wes Craven made him something harder to explain. Sleep itself becomes the problem, which gives the movie permission to break its own physical rules without announcing when the break happened. The practical effects still have the unpleasant texture that cleaner horror often loses. Full Moon is a good home for the original before the sequels turned Freddy into the attraction.
