The Read
Bright Eyes records are catalogs of nerve: the shaky voice, the too-many-words verses, the arrangements that pile up strings and horns until the song nearly buckles. What has changed over twenty-five years is control. Oberst still sings like he might come apart, but now it is a decision rather than a condition. Brooklyn Bowl keeps the crowd close and loud. Many of these listeners have carried the songs since high school, so the singalongs can sound celebratory without losing the distress inside them. The band changes shape across a long set, and Oberst still permits a song to come loose onstage.
