The Read

By night six, the familiar material has already appeared somewhere in the run. Closing night leaves more space for songs that would rarely make a one-off set, including older work or an audience request. Isbell has spent years treating the Ryman as a workshop rather than a trophy, and closing nights are where that pays. Tony Thomas Three opens. The 400 Unit can move from rock-band volume to near silence inside one song, and the Ryman carries both. If you can choose only one night of the run, closing night usually ranges furthest from the standard set.

The Venue

Ryman Auditorium

116 5th Ave N

The best-sounding hall in American music. A riverboat captain built it as a tabernacle in 1892, the pews are the originals, and artists talk about getting to play here the way athletes talk about a title.

The best honky-tonk on Lower Broadway. No cover. Whoever's playing is probably incredible.
