Chief's
Venue · 200 Broadway
Eric Church's six-story bar on the corner of 2nd and Broadway; 'Chief' is his nickname. A ticketed concert hall and a Rodney Scott barbecue floor sit under a rooftop bar, all stacked inside the old Leslie Warner Building.
The reason to care, for a music app, is Neon Steeple: a two-story ticketed hall on the third and fourth floors that books real bills instead of the rotating cover bands most of Broadway runs on. Church plays it himself, alongside a curated list of guests. It's the rare artist-bar on this block where the stage is the point.
Everything else is destination machinery, well-built: a ground-floor dive, a cocktail lounge, Rodney Scott's whole-hog barbecue (Scott is the first James Beard chef on Broadway), and a rooftop Church handed out as 'deeds' to his fan club. The crowd is bachelorettes and Church Choir die-hards in equal measure. A sign at the door reads 'Our pigs fly, our chairs don't.'
