Singer-Songwriter

The Read

Whatever else is true about Morrissey, the singing has held up: the swooping baritone, the phrasing that turns self-pity into architecture, the Smiths songs that remain some of the best-written pop music in English. Live, the band plays them harder than Johnny Marr ever did, which some people find heretical and others find like being handed the songs back. The solo material is uneven and occasionally better than the reputation allows. The risk is well documented and worth stating plainly. Shows get cancelled, and the between-song commentary can pull the night away from the music. That unpredictability follows him into every booking. The Pinnacle is a big modern hall with none of the mythology he usually performs against. If the show happens, the combination of that voice and this catalog should make it one of the month’s more intense nights.
