The Read
Poltergeist spends real time making the Freelings likable before taking their house apart. That is the trick. The parents feel tired and affectionate rather than stupid, the children behave like children, and the supernatural escalation starts almost playfully. By the time the movie becomes enormous, there is still a family at the center of it. Full Moon gets it two weeks before Halloween.
