The Read
Ralph Barbosa's deadpan does most of the misdirection. He takes his time, lets a premise sound almost incidental, then reveals that the sentence has been moving toward a punchline the whole way. The looseness is deceptive. His Cowabunga special made that style legible to a much bigger audience without sanding it down. A weekend at Zanies gives him the proper club setting.

On this block since 1983, and the only venue in the city that puts somebody on stage seven nights a week. A headliner takes the week, four or five shows Wednesday through Sunday.

Smiling ElephantFamily-owned Thai in a tiny house-shaped building on 8th. The pad thai is the reason people wait. Get there when they open. Closed Sunday and Monday, so plan around it.

Hattie B's MelroseHot chicken at the Melrose end of 8th, ordered by heat level from mild up through Shut the Cluck Up. There is a bar attached and a patio on the side. The line moves, and it runs later than most of the corridor.
