The Read

Most people met Hubbard through “Redneck Mother,” a joke that outran him for decades. What he built afterward is the real catalog: greasy, talking-blues Texas grooves, open tunings, songs about mortality and gratitude delivered in a voice that sounds like it has been up all night on purpose. Sobriety sharpened the humor and deepened the later writing. 3rd & Lindsley suits him: people come there to listen, but it is still a bar, and the between-song stories count as much as the songs. Hubbard is one of the great tellers of those, and he takes his time. The grooves sit on one chord past the point of good sense. That is where the pleasure starts.
