The Read

The record was made in the middle of a national argument the band did not start and refused to end quietly, and it turned out to be the best thing they ever did: harder, sadder, and better written than the material that made them famous. “Not Ready to Make Nice” gets the headlines, but the album’s real weight sits in the songs about family and exhaustion. Time has been extraordinarily kind to it. Playing the album in order restores the quieter songs that a standard tour set might lose. Maguire and Strayer’s playing can carry the history without turning the performance into a ceremony; their instrumental force is too often left out of the story of this band. A Nashville crowd brings its own history to this band. That will be in the air whether anyone addresses it or not.
