Navy Yard
Almondine Bakery
Coffee

Hervé Poussot's bakery on Water Street under the Manhattan Bridge, selling baguettes, croissants, éclairs and a case of small tarts, with coffee at the counter and a couple of seats by the window. It has been there since 2002 and the line on a weekend morning goes out the door and takes five minutes. It is shut Monday and Tuesday, which is easy to forget.

Wed to Sun, 8:30am to 6pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday

Navy Yard
Brooklyn Bridge Park, Dumbo end
Outside

The northern end of the park, between the two bridges, where the old Fulton Ferry landing and Pebble Beach sit on the water. Pebble Beach is a short shingle strand you can walk down onto, with the Manhattan skyline framed by the bridge cables, and Jane's Carousel is in its glass pavilion a minute away. The park is free and open from 6am to 1am, and the carousel charges two dollars a ride on a seasonal schedule.

Every day, 6am to 1am. Jane's Carousel runs seasonally, roughly 11am to 6:50pm weekdays and 10am to 6:50pm weekends in summer

Navy Yard
Fort Greene Park
Outside

Brooklyn's first public park, set aside in 1845 after Walt Whitman argued for it in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and laid out by Olmsted and Vaux. The 200-foot column at the top is the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument, put up in 1908 over a crypt holding remains of some of the 11,500 people who died on British prison ships anchored in Wallabout Bay. Wallabout Bay is the water the Navy Yard was later built on.

Open 6am to 1am daily. The visitor center runs 8am to 4pm, later in summer

Navy Yard
Grimaldi's Pizzeria
Food

The Front Street pizzeria under the Brooklyn Bridge that took the Grimaldi's name when Patsy Grimaldi sold it, and the original of what is now a chain across several states. Coal oven, whole pies only, with no slices. It takes no reservations, and the line forms on the sidewalk outside. The hours are wider than its neighbor Juliana's, running to 11pm every night and midnight on weekends.

Mon to Thu, 11am to 11pm. Fri and Sat, 11am to midnight. Sun, 11am to 11pm

Navy Yard
Juliana's Pizza
Food

Patsy Grimaldi came out of retirement in 2012 and opened Juliana's in the Old Fulton Street space where he had run Grimaldi's for decades, naming it after his mother. Coal oven, whole pies only, no slices and no reservations. The kitchen shuts between 3:15 and 4 in the afternoon, and the line outside moves because the oven turns a pie in minutes.

Every day, 11:30am to 3:15pm and 4pm to 9pm

Navy Yard
Kings County Distillery
Drinks

Kings County started distilling in 2010 and now works out of the old Paymaster Building inside the Brooklyn Navy Yard, with a bar in the 1896 gatehouse at the Sands Street entrance. Whiskey comes as flights or straight pours. There are cocktails, while the rest of the list stays with New York wine and beer. Bottles are for sale by the door. Production-floor tours run on select evenings and have to be booked ahead, but the bar itself is walk-in every day.

Mon to Thu, 2pm to 10pm. Fri, 2pm to midnight. Sat, noon to midnight. Sun, noon to 10pm

Navy Yard
Market @77
Food

The ground floor of Building 77 inside the Navy Yard, turned into a 40,000 square foot food hall that anyone can walk into from Flushing Avenue. Russ & Daughters anchors it with an appetizing counter and its production bakery. Jalapa Jar and She Wolf Bakery have counters in there too. It was built for the people who work in the Yard and it is priced and paced for them.

Counters mostly run weekday daytime hours. Russ & Daughters is open daily, 8am to 4pm

Navy Yard
Putnam's Pub & Cooker
Drinks

A corner pub on Myrtle at the Clinton Hill end, with a full kitchen, a long bar and windows onto the avenue. It opens at 11am seven days and runs to 2am Monday through Saturday, with happy hour from four to seven. For anyone walking out of the Navy Yard it is the first real bar you reach.

Mon to Sat, 11am to 2am. Sun, 11am to midnight

Navy Yard
The Naval Cemetery Landscape
Outside

An acre and a half of native meadow built by the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative on the site of the Navy Yard's old hospital cemetery, with a raised boardwalk running through grasses and wildflowers so nobody walks on the ground itself. It is planted entirely with native species and it is loud with bees in summer. Admission is free, dogs are not allowed inside and bikes have to be left at the gate.

Wed to Sun, 10am to 7pm. Winter weekends, 10am to 5pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday

Navy Yard
Vinegar Hill House
Food

A small restaurant on a cobbled stretch of Hudson Avenue in Vinegar Hill, open since 2008, with a wood-burning oven, a pressed-tin ceiling and a garden out the back. The cast-iron chicken and the red wattle pork chop have been on the menu for most of that time and the rest changes. It takes bookings but keeps seats at the bar for walk-ins, which on a weeknight is the easier way in.

Mon to Thu, 5:30pm to 9:30pm. Fri, 5:30pm to 10pm. Sat, 10am to 3pm and 5:30pm to 10pm. Sun, 10am to 3pm and 5:30pm to 9:30pm
